Dark red-ruby. Sexy scents of black raspberry, currant and spices, plus a hint of dusty Red Mountain darkness. Juicy boysenberry, cassis and spice flavors show enticing sweetness and very good definition. There's a suppleness to the middle palate, but the wine finishes more clenched than the Seven Hills or McClellan Estate bottlings, with substantial dusty, building tannins. McClellan does a less extractive vinification with this fruit, taking the wine off its skins after eight or nine days. "It would be insane to do post-fermentation maceration for Klipsun," he explained. He normally likes this wine best between 5 and 15 years after the vintage.
