Hakushu is a single malt from Suntory's forest mountain distillery, found deep in Mt. Kaikomagatake. The unique conditions that surround this stunning location is well reflected in the final products. Crisp, vibrant, herbal, and green are just a few words I can use to explain the very distinct nose and taste of these bottlings. While Hakushu sometimes has to compete for the limelight with it's sibling brands, the quality of the whisky does not waiver. Hakushu is undoubtedly one of the most sought after range of Japanese whiskys on the market.
Hibiki is Suntory's blended whisky product line and they possess delicious elegance and flavor detail, making them extremely easy and pleasurable to drink...a perfect pairing with sushi. Due to the overwhelming popularity and demand for Hibiki whiskys, Suntory discontinued the 12-year age-stated Hibiki in 2015, and replaced it with the current non-age-stated Hibiki Harmony. Then, in September 2018, Suntory discontinued the 17-year age-stated Hibiki. The company was just not able to replenish their stocks quickly enough to continue bottling and releasing these beloved whiskys...
Yamazaki is also a single malt product line, but it is THE most sought after Japanese whisky brand on the market. These days, the 25-year commands upwards of $8000/btl, the 35-year auctions at around $80,000/btl, and the coveted 50-year broke records last year with a hammer price of $300,000 for a single bottle! While most of us aren't willing to spend what equates to a down payment for a house on a bottle of whisky, it does demonstrate the success of Suntory's flagship brand. The nose and flavor profile, the unctuous mouthfeel, and perfect balance of power on the palate make it easy to understand why it is one of the most in-demand whisky brands in the world!
