It is a rare phenomenon that a wine can trace its origins to a single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to Ferruccio Biondi Santi and its fame to his family. Now on the seventh generation of winemakers, the Biondi Santi family continues to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity. Located in the heart of Montalcino, the Tenuta Greppo estate spreads over 25 hectares of vines on soils rich in heavy stones and marl – perfect for the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso. Defenders of a rich enological heritage, the family continues to employ traditional vinicultural methods started well over a century ago, producing wines renowned for their elegance, balance and extraordinary longevity.

Biondi-Santi Description

The 2013 Brunello was produced with the winery’s proprietary clone of Sangiovese Grosso called BBS11, which was identified and selected by Biondi Santi at Tenuta Greppo. For this Brunello they used grapes from vineyards which were between 10 and 25 years of age. It is a wine of great balance that expresses both delicacy and fluidity.

Wine Advocate: 96 Points

This is the year dottore Franco Biondi Santi would pass away, leaving the Brunello appellation orphaned because he was its most beloved and respected paternal figure. A wine shaped very much in his memory, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a stunning edition, with a tight inner core of wild fruit and natural acidity surrounded by elegant tones of blue flower, wild cherry, cured tobacco, balsam herb and camphor ash. This vintage displays a beautiful garnet color that shines in the glass followed by mid-weight concentration and an especially fresh and vibrant finish that lasts for many long minutes. This wine should be held in the cellar for at least ten more years.

Vinous: 92 Points

Luminous bright pale red. The inviting nose offers redcurrant, sour red cherry, licorice, flint and violet aromas. Then slightly richer and riper than the flinty-floral nose suggests, with musky flavors of red fruit and sweet spices complicated by hints of loam. Closes long, musky and smooth.

Wine Spectator: 92 Points

Pretty cherry, strawberry, juniper, wild rosemary, iron and sanguine aromas and flavors are welded to a firm structure. This is ripe and complex, with a fine aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2036. 375 cases imported. — BS
