Bruno Clair Description

Born out of the old Clair-Dau estate, Bruno Clair’s wings are spread widely over the Côte d’Or, covering nine appellations in total. Bruno, first and foremost, is a vigneron and, with the help of winemaker Philippe Brun, produces some of Burgundy’s purest examples, adopting an approach that involves back-breaking vineyard work and minimal intervention winemaking, using a mixture of large old wooden foudres and smaller barriques for the long slow ageing process. The estate is renowned, in particular, for its excellent value Marsannays, stunning Gevreys and old vines Savigny Cuvées.

Vinous: 94+ Points

Energy and grace meld together in Clair's 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers. Floral and lifted on the outset, the 2012 shows remarkable energy through the mid-palate and finish, with gorgeous density and plenty of punch. In short, the 2012 has it all; gorgeous aromatics and enough density to develop for a good 25+ years.

Burghound: 92 Points

There is a deft touch of wood presently setting off the earthy, ripe and somber aromas of wild dark berries, smoke and plenty of sauvage character. The textured, intense and overtly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors possess plenty of power and extract that buffers the firm tannic spine on the mouth coating and markedly austere finish. While this is by no means hard or aggressive, it is clearly built to age and moreover it will require it.

Wine Advocate: (92-94) Points

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cazetiers has a more serious, inward-looking bouquet compared to its fellow premier crus with silky black fruit that remain stoic at this prenatal stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent opening before the tannins kick in, rendering the finish more foursquare and structure. Good depth here with fine persistency, this Gevrey-Chambertin will probably require several years in bottle.
